We had a wonderful evening together on the 30th as we gathered to consider how we can work together to grow our community here at Tiny Estates. The event started with a brief introduction from Abby, who outlined the various strategies we are putting in place to increase resident engagement in the community and also to provide many more services and opportunities for residents. Some of these strategies include better communication through our online Forum and inviting residents to suggest and help coordinate events and activities which interest them. So far, this has resulted in setting up several community services and opportunities including a monthly game night, a library, an items exchange, expanding our community garden and a food co-op.
We then heard via zoom from Lee Pera, one of the founders of the contemporary tiny house movement here in the US. After sharing some of her fascinating background including working around the world in diverse community building projects and helping to start the first urban tiny house community in the US (in Washington, DC), Lee reflected on advice she would give others, like us, who are interested in building sustainable tiny house communities. Her thoughts will definitely be useful to us as we continue to explore community building in coming months.
The rest of the evening was spent exploring together three very different community models, and how they might inform what we could do here at Tiny Estates, or for any community efforts any of us might be involved with in the future. See the attached pdf for details on these three models, all of which have both historic and contemporary aspects of their design and function which, we discovered as we discussed them, do indeed give us much food for community building thoughts!
Stay tuned for future opportunities to get together and continue these discussions...and if you have any ideas or resources you'd like to share, please let us all know. We were pleased with our first attempt to include participants via zoom, and hope to offer this in future events so anyone who can't be with us in person can still join in.
